My maternal grandmother Alice Jane Garwood was said to have been born upstairs
in the pub on 12th November 1883. Her mother Jane Goldsmith died shortly
afterwards and in 1888 her father Alfred Garwood, b 1856 Little Saxham,
remarried and moved Alice & her elder sister Annie to Roudham, Norfolk. In 1881
Alfred was unmarried and living as a lodger at 50 Northgate Street with Jane and
her widowed mother. He was a labourer and maltster (but specifically also shown
as a Labourer/Maltster in Norfolk on the 1891 census). ***
I visited the location with my family in the early 60's and recall it's position
on the apex of roads; and we were shown a cottage and barn backing on to the
railway nearby where I was told the hops etc. would be delivered to brew the
beer in the barn. I expect that Alfred's tenure was merely as a tenant somewhere
between 1881 & 1888. ***
I still have my personal teenage recollections of visiting my grandmother's half
brothers, one of whom who lived on the Mildenhall Road. ***
